So basically what you're saying is that society is messed up and unless it changes (unlikely) there isn't much hope?

I think I'd agree with that!

Well, what the Family Planning Association says about teaching children about sex before they reach puberty is very good and makes a lot of sense, and where we normally begin to teach kiddies about the basics of it now at 10 I think that's about right.

I think the problem lies with the way that society as a whole and almost all forms of media push the idea that it's normal to sleep around, and at increasingly younger ages. Meanwhile people who even suggest considering abstination in any way are demonised and branded as prudish fuddy-duddys who don't live in the 'real world'.

Contraception seems to be a slight issue too. I understand that people who have no objection to any form of contraception should use them: it just makes sense. There's a big difference though between telling people what and where contraception is available and actively throwing it at them because 'they're bound to use it anyway'. It encourages sex at younger ages. Contraception also shouldn't be held up as a cure-all, it's not always 100% effective for one thing, and the contraception mentality means a lot of people think that they can sleep around with no consequences (which is, statistically alone, likley to increase the number of young people having sex regularly, which is bound to increase rates of pregnancies and STDs. It just makes sense).

It seems that children who have sex at a very young age (under 16s probably) are never actually told that what they did was wrong. I'm not talking about judging them harshly or going back to the thankfully long gone days when people were terrified and ashamed if they had a baby outside wedlock, but there's a whole world of difference between treating people well and stopping them taking responsibility for their own actions. If they feel old enough to have sex then surely they're too old for us to pretend they've done nothing wrong.

Parents will have a large part to play in this too, I think. In the last few years I've seen little girls walking around wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the words 'Foxy Siren', 'Hooker', and even 'Porn Star'. Presumably it's just a coincidence that children are becoming sexualised very early...

I don't think you can buy it :( sorry. A lot of My Little Pony collectors buy a pony and alter it to make a custom pony, but the ponies made are normally unique. You could always have a go at making him yourself though!

He looks like one of the ponies that are for sale now (a G3 pony, as opposed to the ones in the 80s and 90s). If you get a white pony all you'll need is a bit of paint for the face and some hair dye - the difficult bit will be the costume, but playing about with a needle and thread might get some results.

There's a lot of information on this excellent site though http://www.aikarin.com/mlp/customs/customs.html so it might be of some use. If I find anything else out I'll post it too. Sorry I can't be of more help x

Well, I haven't heard back from him, and suspect I shan't: addressing chronic loneliness, which is my current semi-hypothetical diagnosis, isn't really something to which I'm well suited, so while I tried to be welcoming (and, indeed, was sincere about it) that probably didn't go far enough.

Oh, well: there was only a narrow time window during which you could have influenced my actions, so no blame attaches itself to you; although your resistance to being contacted for even the best of reasons still bothers me, and I'd still appreciate any information you might be able to provide.

I'm expecting a scintillating post of fascinating informativity and stylistic elegance when you finally pass this way again, mind. (Failing that, we're still waiting for Teikyo Festival report part two. Or has that been altogether abandoned?)

Right, Maria: since I'm not convinced you're checking e-mails anymore—

Please do so in this case. I have another 'delicate' matter about which I'd like to consult you.

(I'll spare you a lecture on the importance of being earn^H^H^H^Hcontactable right now...)

One week on: no return, no reaction, no contrition. No surprise either.

My guess is that a mere two comments on a post aren't sufficient to trigger panic mode, so either she's found something distracting to do offline, or...

"Snake, what's wrong? <em>Snake?! SNAAAAAAAAAAKE!!</em>"

Or we're just failing to be sufficient exhibitors of abundant wit and perspicacity to earn a response.

I agree, these pictures should be banned especially for the ones without breakfast, and saying that it was a normal sponge, that is just too much :).

How about coming back to beg forgiveness for assaulting innocent visitors with a picture of a cake we can't eat? Luckily I'm replete with post-brunch heaviness, so disaster is narrowly averted.

To answer your question, I suggest assuming passersby are all familiar with Wikipedia and basic Googling, and so not bothering unless you have some particularly fine or moderately obscure links in mind. But then, that's my standard policy anyway, and clearly it isn't yours, so——

Whose disembowelment? You're miles away and we've never met. But I'll refrain out of my usual courtesy.

So that's a database app. (I think), a French band, and now a dog, plus the flower... Eventually this trend could become confusing.

Oh, this ritual. I favour http://www.zamzar.com/ for online conversion purposes; you can choose formats other than HTML for the conversion.

However, if you give in people who forget to save in a more widely compatible format will never learn, so I recommend just e-mailing back a lament. Convert the file in case it contains urgent information but pretend you didn't.

Don't get me started on people who send as a .doc attachment what could be said in plain ASCII...

...And following recent correspondence I'm going to conclude you probably don't have the time anyway; although if you're not using a feed reader already, adopting one might improve efficiency a bit. (Fewer pages to check; you know in advance whether there's anything new.)

Ah, it worked; I thought it would be unlike you to batten down the hatches without warning. My other comment was that if you want to catch this sort of thing when it does the rounds it might be worth subscribing to the <a href="http://www.darkroastedblend.com/" rel="nofollow">Dark Roasted Blend</a> feed. (There are other sites I could suggest too, but DRB has round-up posts that often include 'wow art' links. BoingBoing.net, maybe, but there it helps to be concerned about the copyfight.)

That makes me think it's a shame rhetoric (as opposed to mere ugly manipulation tactics) isn't all that widely taught or respected these days; a clerical background was probably advantageous in fructifying Dr. King's talent. Of course the power of the speech isn't simply a matter of technique, but I wonder whether today's political discourse actually offers the language for really noble thoughts to be brought to light. At least your post gives me hope that there's still an audience for them.

The filter's toned the red-eye down from the original, but there's still something not quite right about the eye colour.

Anyway. Your Yuletide sonnet is condemned to have the kind of self-absorbedly melancholic opener that's becoming my signature, but seeing you haven't completely sunk into torpidity will help me write a more upbeat ending than you might have suffered.

You. Have. No. Luck.

I'm reading H.J. Jackson's <i>Marginalia</i> at the moment, and although it's not going to convert me to bespoilment (except by way of reply, <a href="http://faceofthemoon.blogspot.com/2007/11/marginalia.html" rel="nofollow">as confessed previously</a>) it has given me a fuller appreciation of why some people feel they make a book 'lived in' or enable a kind of link to previous owners. But... I wonder whether part of that is the informal spontaneity; DIY covers seem a bit 'forced' by comparison. I was chuffed to find my second-hand copy of <i>Popolocrois</i> (PSX RPG) had the original pack-in stickers untouched, and I'd probably think the same way of a second-hand book.

I'd never heard of this book; I'll have to look it up... er, when I've finished these other books. (*Glances at work pile, pleasure pile, misc. others...*)

Since I'm procrastinating too: wouldn't 'Day of the Triffids' be more respectable for a dissertation-avoiding plant development biologist?

This is why I favour e-mail: there's still a single point of failure at the inbox, but at least I can save messages easily (including headers), access via multiple clients and have multiple e-mail accounts.

I thought you were being a bit unresponsive under the circs.

Sorry, I'll think about the titles a little more in future. I didn't mean to worry anyone.

Fungus cat isn't a reference, he's actually supposed to be four plants (if you look closely you can see a single green leaf struggling out of his left cheek. I'd like to know if that leaf was healthy or if it was just somehow preserved). The fact that it quite clearly failed to become four plants was what made me worry about my masters.

I'll admit to being pulled in by the Alfirin reference. An ex-girlfriend's grandfather was a writer and a good friend of Tolkien's. After he died and we were sorting through his stuff we found a signed first-edition copy of the Hobbit. I think there was an actual halo of light eminating from it.

Please remember that I use a feed reader and refrain from using alarming titles in future-- *Stops worrying, examines photograph* Is that a lighter? Are you a cat-burner...?

More to the point, is 'Fungus Cat' meant to be a reference?

No, you're not the only one lamenting.

Blogger doesn't support trackback, so here's the paragraph from http://faceofthemoon.blogspot.com/2007/10/darkness.html in which I respond to you:

In Alfirin's analysis 'this step has the feel of all those patronising student committees in schools, where school children jump to the chance to change things and have their opinion heard, failing to realise not only that they will have no more attention paid to them than before, but also that they are being used as part of a propaganda war to make the school look better.' So long as the consultations are merely decorative, manipulated affairs they won't change anything, so they'll merely be an annoyance and a net cost; the government is in any case adept enough at hearing what it wants to hear. But I worry that a government which doesn't always know what it wants to hear – remember the famous obsession with focus groups in the early Blair years – might actually look to student juries for inspiration and fool itself the more effectively into thinking it heard vox populi. Bad prospects either way.

Downing Street... furniture? :S *confuzzlement*

I have to admit that I didn't even read the Japan profile properly :( I wrote the blog post having looked at a few countries, and couldn't decide which to use. It was very nearly a fact file about the Vatican instead, but having done a relatively exclusive religious-ey post very recently I thought it might be overkill. So I picked Japan in the end just... because :S and didn't really pay any attention.

Now that I look at it it *really* doesn't look like a coat of arms. Curses! I'm going to have to look things up now *wanders off*.

I know we're supposed to be playing Downing Street Furniture, but I think I should point out that it's misleading to use 'coat of arms' in reference to what's properly a Mon.

Having taken the plunge into meta-commentary, the next step is to become morbidly interested in referrer links. (I find I get a lot of people who searched for strings like 'faces of the moon in October 2007', which explains altogether too many hits.)

Hey :) Sorry it took so long to reply! It's definitely a very popular event - the entire village is full of people all week. They get a lot of money from the miniature scarecrows they sell to visitors, from the trail sheets (and pencils, pencil tops etc.) that people can buy from stalls, and, of course, from the food and drink (sandwiches, cream teas etc.) for sale in the village hall... which had a mini scarecrow at every table! ^_^

So with thousands of visitors coming through during the week, almost all of whom will spend a minimum of pound (more likely several) the village will make a nice profit for the school, Church, and hall. I think they deserve it :)

Well, the wine which is poured out is drunk before the end of the service (with the eucharistic ministers each consuming the remaining wine in the bottom of the chalice they were using). The bread which remains is also left in the tabernacle of the Church to be used later. It's just that there will always be traces of wine which remain in the chalice, and always crumbs of the host which will be left behind - so when the vessels are washed these fragments will end up in the water used to wash them (hence the need for the water to be disposed of carefully).

In most modern Churches the piscina is normally a special sink behind the scenes, but in Churches which are either old or incredibly cool the piscina remains near the altar (where I think they're technically meant to be).

Interesting little fact there Maria, I never knew about that before! I've never seen on in an Anglican church, I always thought that any leftovers from the sacrament had to be consumed by the priest or kept for another time?

Hey :) Sorry for taking ages to reply - when I went on the trains a few years ago you didn't have to book in advance, but I know it sometimes gets rather busy. I'd have suggetsed, were this the summer, maybe booking up to reserve, but if it's the autumn then you should be ok just turning up. I hope you enjoy it ^_^

I can imagine a lot of hard work going into this but a lot will be spent on creating these scarecrows as well, so how do they earn? This must really be a popular event then.

Well I really don't mind a long answer as long as it is informative, which it definitely was.

And I just saw the YouTube videos and the coordination, it's amazing, after being up all night with my project deployment they were indeed funny and refreshing.

Hi Adeel ^_^ Hehehehe, thank you for helping me not to feel so silly about George Winterburn's day out. My parents and I got some rather funny looks when taking the pictures :D

As for bell ringing, it's not quite the same as the Muslim call for prayer but it's still a very nice comparison, and one that I'd not thought of. It can only be carried out where there are bell towers (obviously) and it's usually done during religious services to add to the worship. Although it's typically associated with Christian services it's important to remember that the bells are musical instruments; this means that the bell ringers will have to rehearse the tunes that they play (the tunes being formed by the 'specific sequences' of ringing - and those sequences are interesting enough in their own right) outside the times of services, and also sometimes play for the fun of it.

From what I've seen people are really attracted to bell ringing because of the social aspect: as an 'instrument' ringing Church bells requires several people to be playing at once, so as well as drawing people together during worship it also adds to the community of the Church.

Sorry that my reply was so long :) I tend to waffle on for far too much time :) Oh, and I'm very glad you liked Stellarium - it really is such an impressive program.

Hey, this is Adeel came here from David's blog. First of all let me say I am really impressed by the way you expressed George's day out.
Anyways a quick question about something I have not been able to figure out. The bell ringing website, what do you mean by bell ringing? Is it something like we Muslims do, I mean calling for prayer or something like that? And from the site it looked like bell ringing is an art, with those specific sequences. And finally, thanks for informing about Stellarium, even though I am a Software Engineer but becoming a space scientist was my first choice (a long story). Bye.

Parts II and III are already prepared (even though one of them is more of a joke). It was either myself or my Daddy who took this photo, but I can't remember which of us it was :S It's just fascinating to see - but by the groove that seems to be forming in the stone I get the feeling the tree is going to break it. So watch this space for an update :D

How cool, did you take this photo yourself? I'm assuming for the title that there'll be a part II?!

A little sleuthing seems to have been done here too :) Hello David, and welcome to my blog ^_^ Since you're a big Apple fan I should have guessed you'd read Fake Steve's work.

I'm beginning to think it's good that he's been unmasked though: I watched something on the Forbes website yesterday, and Fake Steve has a book coming out in a little while and was considering coming clean about the blog just before his book would be released. I think that would have spoilt it for me more than having a random journalist finding out.
